Description
Erected in 2006 during the first year of recovery from the storm, this granite memorial lists the names of 163 individuals as a permanent tribute to the lives lost in St. Bernard during Hurricane Katrina. It is located in Shell Beach on the bank of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, a stretch of water dug by the Army Corps of Engineers for commercial purposes in the 1960's, which is now permanently closed due to extensive saltwater intrusion, erosion, and degradation of the surrounding wetlands. St. Bernard Parish was one of the hardest hit areas during Hurricane Katrina. Each year, on the anniversary of the storm, a rememberance ceremony is held at the memorial.
